3rd brake light wiring

Postby noseoil » Mon Apr 06, 2015 10:30 pm

Is it possible to use 2 diodes to connect a 3rd brake light on a trailer? Can a diode be placed: 1 between the green wire & a second between the yellow wire to make a pigtail which will power a simple LED 3rd brake light?

If you are taping off stop/turn element of regular bulb fixture, probably will "work" but it will flash when you use turn signals only...

Just buy one of those stuff it in your receiver brake lights. They can be re-manned into a 3rd brake light in any form you wish . There is some rather inexpensive isolation circuits that eliminate the turns from the brake lights that it is not worth trying to duplicate.

OK Bob, I think I got it! Found a converter at e-trailer that should work. Not too spendy & easier than re-inventing the wheel.

Here is the one I reinvented to act as a 3rd brake lite for the barn.

Bob, no worries about the posts. I know I'm "a bit dense" at times (we'll just leave the stubborn part out for now), so reading it that many times made a good impression on me & you got your point across!

I went the easy but more expensive way and used a small converter box from etrailer #118158 Vehicle to Vehicle Taillight Converter.

I search on google and found this:

"The way to connect the third light is to connect both brake light wires to the third light but this must be done with the use of diodes in each connection to the third light to prevent the flow of electricty between brake lights. A diode allows current to flow in only one direction.

Diodes are available at Radio Shack. Get a couple that are 12 volts or more, at least 1.5 amps... about 5 bucks for two. There will be an arrowhead on them showing which way the current flows. Wire them into each brake light wire so that the arrow heads point towards the third light. Tie the ends together, run a single wire to your third light, and you are done."

Give it a try and let us know if it worked
