Help finding tail light brackets...sort of electrical ?

Postby Hennesseystealth » Thu Apr 23, 2015 3:06 pm

I was planning on mounting my tail lights on the fenders but CA seems to be a bit picky about getting closer to the rear corners. So, I am looking at two options and can't seem to find the right brackets. My LED tail lights have the standard studs in a vertical orientation. So, I need either an L bracket to mount to the sidewalls or an L bracket with a 90 degree twist to weld to the bottom of the frame. I haven't been able to find a source for either and don't have any spare sheet metal thicker than 0.040" to fab it myself (too thin)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Are you LED taillights similar to the regular utility trailer type lights? I ask because my CT has flat LED lights that only have 2 small screws and one hole in trailer for wiring.
So for my utility trailers I just used a short piece of angle iron welded to frame- could be bolted. There are also a lot of different small brackets available at place like TSC.

Here are the lights on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Maxxtow-Towing-Products-70205-Trailer/dp/B008CE0W5Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429823137&sr=8-1&keywords=led+trailer+lights

They don't show the backs but they have ~1/4" studs with the wires coming out between the studs. Normally, the brackets would have two small holes top and bottom and a larger hole in the middle for the wires.

Yes those are what I thought you meant. I mounted my lights on my homemade kayak trailer on angle iron. Actually on a couple of trailers. Here is a poor pic of my kayak trailer with racks removed and plywood u opted on to haul motorcycle. If you can zoom. Oh and none of the kits I bought had any mounts included.

I did find brackets that would allow me to easily mount the lights below the bottom edge like you did; however, I don't want to risk some DMVer deciding that I didn't meet the DOT requirements that the lights must be at least 15" above the ground. I guess I am a bit paranoid about running into someone that wants to find a reason not to give me tags.

I think in Mi their impressed if you have working lights.
But you could get a piece of iron or aluminum angle and use 2 pieces. Like upside-down L and mount on the side of trailer.

I would use "L" bracket off to side...

That is my idea but can't find anything that has the holes where I need them. So, looks like I will have to get some larger L brackets, drill the holes, and then paint them.

Have you an IKEA store nearby.
They have all manner of neat brackets for shelves , curtians & whatnot.
Of course requires minimal vision & mechanical ingenuity as its not likely anything there will be intended to fit a custom tail lamp project...

Unfortunately, no IKEA. But good idea. I am sure I can find something at Lowes or HD. If not, I will have my son-in-law get something from one of his metals suppliers and we'll fab something up.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. I did find what I was looking for on Amazon. I guess you just have to be persistent and keep changing your search terms.
