PD4000 dimensions and other

Postby Delta99 » Mon Jun 01, 2015 10:45 am

I'm thinking of mounting my battery and a PD4540 in a tongue box. I don't have much space in the galley. Plus I'd rather run my heavy wires about a foot, rather than the full length of the trailer. Is there anything wrong with this idea? Would the box need to be vented? And what are the basic dimensions of the PD4540 unit? I want to make sure it will fit

I had to Google "PD4540", Had no idea what that was.
First few websites listed its specs of dimensions, width, colour, etc. Even its battery requirement and included accessories.
I dont care what you fit in your tonguebox, Just dont think your request is tnttt.com appropriate. :goodnight:

Placing any sort of electronics in an area with the potential for an acid vapor atmosphere is a bad idea. Even if the box was ventilated, unless the battery itself was totally isolated and directly vented outside. I have seen what prolonged exposure to an acid atmosphere can do to metals and I would never do that to my electronics.

I agree with MtnDon, your PD should be in a dry compartment of its own away from the battery. Keep in mind that there is a lot of electrical stuff coming in to the back side of the PD so you need to allow room for all that and any future work. In addition, you will need to get to the front side to flip breakers and replace fuses. I used one section of the cabinet space between the cabin and the galley that was strictly dedicated to electrical (AC and DC). A cabinet door from the cabin allowed access to work on the back side and the front of the PD was facing the galley for easy access to flip breakers.

And I can add that running wires to the PD4045 were very intimidating to me. I was confused with what connected to where. But a lot of goolge searches and reading all I could in this forum helped a lot. It was as if someone turned the lightbulb on when it all sank in. Now I am very confident on being able to connect this unit into my system (hopefully in a week or so). Good luck with your efforts.

Thanks everyone! I just downloaded the manual on their website, and it clearly says "Do not mount in battery compartment." Sorry, I guess I could have answered my own questions. My idea was to avoid running 45' (positive, negative and positive charge circuit) of 4ga wire under the trailer. It's clear to me now that the only option to consider is mounting it in the galley. Thank you!

I mounted my deep cycle marine battery on the tongue and my PD in the galley. I ran all my DC wiring for the cabin and the trailer lights inside the cabin in conduit under the mattress. Check the pics on pages 8 and 9 in my album for details. Also, my journal gives a detailed narrative of the work with wire sizes and other helpful info.
