amateur radio

I know there are HAM's out there. Does anyone combine their camping with radio? Seems like a natural fit. I have a general class license, just enough to get by the tests and no real experience. but I like the idea of these two hobbies coming together. What gear should I be looking at? Mike

I have a Flex1500, small windows tablet for control, and a buddie pole. The camper has battery with solar panel. Makes a good combination for camping almost anywhere.

I limit my camping /mobile involvement to VHF/UHF. It is just easier for antennas and all and I like making local contacts near where I am.

My cargo trailer conversion is equipped with a ham shack (actually, it's a ham shelf ) I have an Icom 706 mk2 covering VHF and HF. I have a mount on the roof for my hamsticks. 20M and 40M seem to work the best. I also have a 5/8 wave VHF whip mounted on the trailer roof. The nice thing about my 7x16 CT is that the metal roof makes a nice ground plane. Most of the time I use the radio to listen to and check into various IRLP based nets. Sometimes I'll tune up the HF side if I know the band conditions are good. Future plans include installing a 30 foot telescoping mast so I can raise my dipole. I also have various handhelds for use in and around the trailer.

I have a QRP HF rig in my tear. I set up a portable antenna at campsites. Usually a mobile whip of some sort on a stake, and a few radials.
