mounting battery monitor sampler

How did you mount the sampler-thingie? It is relatively heavy for its size, so I don't want it flopping around in line with my negative battery connection!

I think you are referring to the shunt. Check to see if the two large lugs on it are removable. Mine were. No bracket came with it.

I used some 1/8" plywood mounted on the back (lug nut head) side of the shunt (or use any insulating material, don't use sheet metal!). You might be able to use something thicker depending on the length of the two main threaded lugs and then countersink for the lug bolt heads on a thicker material. Drill two holes so the shunt lugs will fit through. I made the ply big enough for a single screw to go through to mount to a wall or under cabinet. Wired it up and then screwed the whole thing up out of the way with the wood screw.

Make your leads from the shunt long enough to allow whatever movement you need to move the battery so you can access the lugs there as well. So maybe a six inch coil of slack from the battery wires tucked up and tie wrapped somewhere.

Sorry I don't have a photo. I think it should be clear.

If I recall, the shunt comes with a plastic bracket that I screwed to my bulkhead.

I agree with tony I think mine came on a plastic bracket.

The little guy I did I removed one of the bolts and used the screw for the battery to hold it on the top of the battery, but that one only has a 10 wire coming off of it.

Darn, mine doesn't have a bracket.

So they removed one of the bolts and bolted it right on the negative terminal of the battery?

Ya, mine had a clear plastic bracket as well. I mounted it about 3 feet from the battery. They don't need to be physically near the battery, but do need to be, electrically, before the negative side goes to ground(s) and/or negative runs.

As an aside, the proper distance between the shunt and the battery is a function of wire size, wire length and maximum expected current flow; so as to avoid excessive voltage drop.

My previous reply might not have been a clear description and I suppose you are beyond this task. For other builders that run into the "no included mounting bracket" situation... my solution.
