Grounding MPPT Victron Solar Controller

Postby Capebuild » Sun Aug 29, 2021 7:10 pm

I just installed in place a 100/30 Victron Solar Controller. I'm not sure where the ground screw should be connected to. I suppose one place would be the chassis frame. But I'm wondering if it could be connected to a negative terminal on the Blue Seas bus bar I'm using. In my overall set up there is no grounding at all to the chassis frame and the chassis frame is not being used for any negative wiring returns. Any thoughts about where to wire that grounding screw on the solar controller?

Thanks.

What does the installation documentation say?

Typically that ground screw is used in a residential system and is an earth ground. So my opinion is dont worry about, or just bond it to the frame if it makes you feel better.

I looked at the manual there is no mention of it, so thats a dead end. Also their customer service is ok, and some times from what I have heard poor.

Victron's business model is

buy from good quality certified dealers

they are your frontline support

Victron supports them if anything needs escalating

Their online support forums are great

their top level engineers do regularly contribute there.

Top quality and value gear.

> Chassis grounding

> A separate ground path for the chassis ground is permitted because the chassis is isolated from the positive and the negative terminals

So, not mandatory to ground that chassis point
