Wiring Switches

Postby Capebuild » Thu Oct 07, 2021 3:34 pm

I'm getting ready to wire in some switches. I've got a limited amount of space created in the side wall to house these
switches. The switches I'm using have blade contacts sticking out from them which I was going to crimp the appropriate blade
connectors to the wire I'm using. However with these blade connectors sticking out from the back of the switches and add
the wire to it, the switches will not fit into the space created for them (lack of depth).

Asking if anyone has bent the blade connectors at right angles.... so crimp on the wires and bend the connector where the wires hook into
and bend that at 90 degrees from where the blade receiver is? Or open to other suggestions? I'd rather not add a spacer block of wood
to bump out the switches to create more room (but may have to resort to that). I thought of enlarging the holes on the switch's blades, soldering
the wire on (with shrink tubing) but with 14 gage wire, the holes get kind of large leaving not much meat on the switch's connection blade.

Or maybe there's some other blade connector I'm not aware of.

This must be a common issue....just curious how others deal with it.....
Thank you for any suggestions!

John

I have bent the connectors with small needle nose pliers. I recommend bending before crimping as sometimes they snap off.

John, I make a small wood block to house the switches so no bending necessary.
The switch blocks add a point of interest since I make them in an exotic wood combination.
I'll submit an image later.

I've bent both the blades on the switches and the terminals. They do occasionally break but I haven't had trouble if I only bend once.

Even though bent I add depth with a piece of wood the appropriate thickness.

I used wood blocks to improve spacing, however, You can also get right angle connectors.

There are crimp on connectors where the wire is at a right angle to the plug. I've never used them, so I can't say much more! Good luck!

Don has the best idea, but I just solder em on flat. Not drilling them out.

I have found bending and twisting on the crimps make them loosen, so solder it is.

Google “ Flag Terminals.” They are made for the job. The very tip of your ratcheting crimp tool should accommodate them nicely. I use the “non-insulated” flag terminals and the matching non-insulated die set on my crimper.

Beautiful, Danny. Thank you for showing me. Looks like a framed work of art.

Just soldering the wires on, as Scott suggested is a good suggestion. I like that.... with some shrink tubing.

Thank you all for the suggestions. After my original post I had googled right angle connectors and see there is such a thing. So thanks for suggesting those.
In the end I think any kind of connector is going to take up more room than I'd like if I keep the current opening I've created.

Thinking about this I may just add a bump out similar to what Danny has.... but thank you all again for the feedback.

Anther option would be to solder direct to the terminal. I had limited space in my under shelf pods so every connection in them is soldered and heat shrinked.Image
