When you all are refering to 14 gauge, 12 gauge etc, are you using Romex 14-2 wiring? I know thats a simple question, but i read here and look at videos and cannot see exactly what wiring they are using.

I have standard electrical but i am wanting to put a small AC unit in, i am in south alabama, to use when hooked up to shore power. Also i have gotten great ideas from seeing the various wiring designs, if anyone has any more i like all the various ideas

Thanks I am new to this board

Welcome to the forum!

We seldom use solid wire, which is what most Romex is. (I've heard there is stranded Romex, but have never seen it.) The reason is that the trailer flexes a little when travelling, and that flex will tend to break solid wire over time.

For 12 volt DC circuits there are various options. I used speaker cable, but there are internet superstitions regarding that. Others have used nice looking red and black stranded wire cables of various gauges.

For shore power wiring in the tear, I used 12 gauge extension cords with the plugs and outlets cut off. Works fine for our AC/heater, and for outlets in the galley and cabin.

Thank you that makes sense.

Are you running a ground as well or just the ground to the fuse box?

I have very little 120v wiring, but what I do have is stranded SO cord type. For the 12v stuff I have much more. It’s all speaker/AV cable. Still going strong after 15 years.

I run the green wire grounds from everything that uses AC to a ground bus in our breaker box, and then ultimately to the shore power plug's ground wire. I also ground the trailer frame to the ground bus, for safety.
