hey george.
the radio on my boat shuts down when i turn the volume or the base up,
it started doing this last season,
i have turned the base all the way down and was able to increase the volume, (somewhat)
it does this with a fully charged battery,
when i turn the river lights on, (with the motor not running)
the radio will power down, (off)
then it will power back up,
the radio is several (5?) years old and was moderately priced,
i do appreciate your knowledge and will appreciate your advice on how to correct this problem,

thanks,

george / waywardson

George, Sounds like a weak earth to me. The radio in my truck started doing something very similar and I discovered that the earth connection on the amplifier had worked loose. Tightened it up and no more problemo.
Cheers

George, sounds like a capacitor inside your radio is fubar, if it's worth fixxing, take it to a marine radio shop, but if it's cheaper to buy a new one, i'd go that route.

MadJack, sounds to me like your dilithium crystals are cracked..try spinning on your head and see if that helps. 8)

Could be many things.

Some have been suggested but 2 others come to mind

1. wire guage is too small and voltage drop causes the cut out, this sounds especially reasonable with the running lights effect.

2. Battery is weak (may show fully charged due to surface charge)

george / waywardson,

I agree in part with George's #1 answer. Voltage drop, do you have any connectors or terminal strips in the 12v + or - wires going to the radio? Sounds to me like you are getting minimal voltage to the radio, and when the load demand is changed for one reason or another it fails to operate. Check wire connections on the positive and negative to the radio would be my 1st look, after that I think it would be time to get out a good multi-meter and look for voltage drop. If you find none, perhaps you have corrosion within the radio itself.

...sorry George(wayward) but it is just that electronic gremlins are so hard to fix even with the unit in front of you much less a SWAG based on a basic description of the problem...I just felt that realistically, it was asking anyone a lot to come up with the PROPER diagnosis without the unit in their hands...in other words, I thought that there may have been a posibility that you were putting George(the other one)on...my bad  .............

not a problem Jack,
but I would appreciate your not confusing me with some of the folks on the board who fail to show respect for knowledge,

heres what i have come up with,
the problem is voltage drop for sure,
i ran new wiring direct from radio to battery with inline fuse,
(bypassing the fuse box)
problem solved,

but i guess i will need to replace the fuse block,

Hi George

Could you not route the new wire via the old fuse block? check the terminals out and clean up of needed.
