I'm still a car camper at this point; haven't begun building my trailer yet, but I did buy a hitch! My car-camping requirements are complicated somewhat by the fact that I drive a Miata.
My basic list is as follows:
- Tent
- Blue tarp (I use it as a ground cloth)
- Inflatable mattress
- Sleeping bag and pillow, plus a fleece blanket for colder evenings
- Folding table (got one of those 28x28 slat-top tables from Target; works fine for my needs)
- Director's chair
- Two-burner stove
- Coffee percolator (mine came from REI; at $35 it was expensive but it will probably last the rest of my life)
- small saucepan (for heating a can of soup or chili, both of which are camping staples for me)
- 9" nonstick skillet (for those days when I want a hot breakfast)
- cooler for storing milk, eggs, and most importantly, BEER!!
- cooking utensils of various types
- aluminum foil, small zip-top bags, etc.
Once I have a trailer, I probably won't expand this list much (at least not at first). Part of the attraction of building a trailer is the fact that I can leave most of this stuff in it between trips to the track (auto racing, not horses

).
I have found checklists to be absolutely essential as a car camper. There have been just too many times where I've realized I forgot something after I was already an hour or more away from home!
