Homemade Portable Toilet

Anything to do with camping, fundamentals, secrets, etc...

Wanring, title of book may offend some.

This book actually has a serious side to it, although it does have some funny situations. But it does a good job of explaining how to pick the ideal site and why it is important to either pack out, or bury it properly.

We went with the Hassock from Wally World
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... d=10098758

It seems to do the trick pretty well plus we didn't have to do the engineering to build something that might or might not work.

Man! This thread died years ago, but so what!

That Luggable Loo from Bass Pro Shops (Army-Navy surplus stores, Campmor or Cabela's) is super simple. You just put a plastic garbage bag in for a liner and put in a scoop of PEAT MOSS every time you use it. No smell. No running water required.

We used to do this while we were developing our property. We had a lid on a 5 gallon bucket and added peat moss after each use. Worked great. No stink at all!!!!.

Where do you find peat moss? I've heard the suggestion of clumping kitty litter, which is certainly quite available. And they do now make seats specifically to fit those 5 gallon buckets.

You can get peat moss at almost any garden or lawn care store and you can get the seat for the bucket from here. bucket seat

I might be a good alternative for those who want a pot in the TD or who will use a cabana/pot combo to avoid the common bathhouse toilet scene.

As I read the article this was a toilet designed by an architect for use in third world, urban poor, and disaster situations.

Sawdust works great and it's cheap. Make sure it's dry. Keep it in another bucket or container nearby.

Most people won't notice any odors. However another trick for people who are lazy and don't want to empty the loo often: Keep your #1 and #2 separate. In other words, don't pee in poo bucket. (however mother nature doesn't care, look up humanure composting)

If a tall person thinks your 5 gallon bucket is too low, you can get a raised toilet seat. I inherited one and discovered this accidentally. It fits perfectly inside a 5 gallon bucket, and makes it feel sturdy.

Ours is at a permanent camp with just the bucket lid over it. However it would have to be secured to take on the road.
This is the type, make sure the underside is like this one
