My dad gave me Family Camping Better Homes 1961 book, and it is a hoot! Here are some pics.

I have some Super 8 films from back in the early sixties when I camped as a kid
Our tent took about an hour to set up, took four people, and all cooking was done over an open fire.

Those old camping books are great. Everyone is so clean-faced and smiling.

And not only did we walk uphill both ways to and from school, it was in snow up to our elbows.

Honestly, that tent was a nightmare. All canvas and weighed a ton. If I can find a picture, I'll post it

We had a tent like that until my Dad traded in his Falcon for a 69 Toyota Corolla. We couldn't get the trunk lid shut with the tent inside.

I learned to drive on a 62 Ford Falcon with three-on-the-tree, then graduated to a 1973 Beetle, then 1970 Beetle, but finally 78 Corolla that had 232,000 miles when someone hit me and took it out.

Now I'm driving a first generation 1989 Chevy S10 4cyl w/straight stick that I bought for $800 and it is butt ugly. But it runs good, had it over a year and only replaced the started and the ignition switch. No problems otherwise. Had 198,000 miles when I bought it and has 202,000 now! I dig that truck. Useful, low gas mileage, kinda fun to drive...

We used to go camping in an old Jaguar when I was a kid. My dad always had a nack of picking up rare cars cheap. Had a huge trunk to carry everything.
My dad dropped the transmission crossing a bridge one day just as we were entering a camp ground. Got towed to the campsite where we unloaded, then they took the car away to fix it. I think it took a while because the parts were hard to find.

Andrew! What an awesome sketch - John Cleese/Grahm Chapman who would go on to form Monty Python, and the classic Marty Feldman, too. So funny, I always thought it was just a Python sketch.

Of course, when we watched it as kids, we didn't have a TV, we had to take turns reciting it from inside a cardboard box, pretending it was a TV...

I just went to Amazon and bought a copy in like new condition for about $6.00. I want to learn how to camp out of a station wagon while wearing a tie.

Of course we didn't have computers and internet when I was a kid. We had a sliding rule that none of us understood how to use, an abacas and two cans connected by the string. When we lost the string we had to cut both bottoms out of the cans and yell through them. When this got boring we would eat the cans.
