Dumb newbie HF trailer question

Postby Adrian Thompson » Wed Jul 17, 2013 12:03 pm

Potential dumb newbie question here. Do HF make a 5x8 trail I’m not aware of? Lots of people are talking about them, but most builds seem to be 5’ yet all the HF trailers I can see are 4x8, not 5x8.

I’ve got a tiny little 3x5 HF trailer that I’ve used for tent camping for the last 3 years. Just got back from a 4,400 mile 2 week round trip to Colorado and after a total of 5-k miles over the last 3 years, much of it at 80mph on those tiny wheels, I finally had to tighten up one wheel bearing at last, even with those itty bitty 10” wheels doing a gazillion rpm. Based on that I’m confident that those Chinese hubs should be fine with 12-13” wheels on a teardrop under 80mph

Why I need a teardrop - this is just too small for 2 weeks and 4,400miles!

HF doesn't show one on their web page and I am not aware that they have ever had a 5X8. I've owned several HF trailers over the years and they are great little trailers as long as you know their limitations and don't overload them. Northern Tool makes a nice DIY 5X8 that a lot of folks on the forum have used as a foundation for their build. If you want to stick with the HF trailers, you can always build out over your wheels on a 4X8 like a lot of folks have done. Search the Trailer and Chassis section here and you will find a lot of discussion on this subject. Welcome to the forum.

Les is right. HF does not make a 5x8. Northern Tool has a 5x8 bolt-together kit that is basically identical to the HF one, but wider and black. I really wouldn't be surprised if they both actually came from the same Chinese manufacturer, but don't quote me on that.

And yes, a lot of us built 5' wide on the HF 4x8.
