What is the CORRECT part number for the HF 1740# axle seal

Postby kd5edj63 » Sat Jan 04, 2014 3:53 pm

I did some searching on here. so before someone says do a search, I did. And it yielded a wasted trip into town chasing the wrong part number.223255 is not correct. So, all jokes aside, what is the real part number for the axle seal that bears the numbers 52-30-10.
I ended up buying a $12 seal plus gas and time, and put the spring from the seal on my origional seal. Its a crap shoot as to if it will seal or not.
Sure would be nice if China just left the hubs dissasembled so people like me wont destroy a seal taking the hubs back apart

Unfortunately you get from HF what you pay for.

Take the seal and hub to a bearing house and they can measure things and get you the right seal. In my experience, auto parts stores are a waste of time.

Bearings and seals for a HF 1720lb 4x8 kit.....

30205 Taper Roller Bearing 25x52x16.25... http://www.amazon.com/30205-Taper-Wheel ... B002BBO4MG

Double Lip Grease Seal - 1.17" I.D. - 2.05" O.D. - Markings: 30-52-10 - Fits Bearing: 30205.... http://bearingengineering.com/default.a ... 30X52X10TC

The part number for the grease seal will vary from manufacturer or supplier. The markings on the seal are the metric dimensions of it. (Outside-Inside-Width)

This is the correct seal for MY HF 1800# trailer. I've seen several different designations for this trailer (1720, 1740, 1800, etc.) but in 2006 when I bought mine it was listed as 1800#. My younger son has a NAPA store & researched the bearings/seals. His reference listed a couple of seals but the first one he brought the center hole was too small (30-52-8) to go over the journal on the spindle so he brought the next larger size which fit correctly, 32-52-8. I've been using these for several years with no problem; leakage, excessive wear, or otherwise. In my experience some of the HF trailers are mfg'd in different locations & may well have differences in spindle/journal dimensions. I know that ain't supposed to be the case but I'd measure for my self & have my dealer get the appropriate size to fit my rig. My son's reference did call for 10mm thick seals but the SKF seals at his warehouse were 8mm & have worked fine...

The actual numbers right on the seal itself are 30-52-10
Thanks for the input.

My therapist says my logic is impeccable and 99% of the time he agrees with me. Soooooooo...........

You spent $12 for a seal that didn't work, a few bucks in gas (say $5), and an hour (at minimum wage about $10) for a total of (conservatively) $27 and didn't get a single seal that fit.

Or, you can sit in your easy chair, order 10 seals which is probably a lifetime supply so you never have to waste your time buying seals again, shipped to your door for about $31 (I checked your zip code in Texas).

Seems like a "no brainer" to me.

That said, I know I'm not normal but I think I'm what normal (at least in some respects) ought to be.

Cheers,

Gus

Hind sight is indeed 20-20. Had they told me, "your seal is in, its not the correct one, but it has arrived". I could have saved a bit of money. Stupid me for doing a forum search before asking in a thread. My bad

Sarcasm? Sometimes foresight is 20-20 also.
