Wheels for the NT trailer

Postby jeporter25 » Tue Mar 12, 2013 9:15 pm

Does anyone know if these wheels will work on the Northern Tool 5x8 trailer http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/13_ ... ts-547.htm ? I sure think that they would look sweet with those dome type hubcaps.

Yes, that wheel will definitely fit your NT trailer. I recently bought the same size wheel in a white spoker and it fits fine on my NT 5X8. The only thing you will have to watch is your choice of tire. With the 1/2" inset on the wheel, you will need to measure your overall tire width to make sure it will not rub the frame. A 155 or 165 should work fine. A 175 will be less than 1/2" from the frame.

I figure that I can use the stockers for spares

that's what I did; no need to buy a third wheel and tire
the 12" is a little shorter than the 13" so I kept both 12 inchers to use as a matched set for spares just in case (especially if you still have a long way to go)
I throw my spare in the back of the TV so two don't really take up that much more room than one

Isn't the center hole on that wheel 2 1/2"? I thought that the center hole on the Northern tool 12 inch wheels was 3 inches. The reason I ask this instead of measuring myself is that we are in the process of having ours built and I am trying to figure out a way to incorporate baby moon hubcaps. Those wheels are the only 12 or 13 inch wheels I've seen that have the proper "nodules" to pop that baby moons on.

On my two year old NT 5X8, the hub diameter is 2 1/2" and the center hole on the stock 12" wheels is 2 13/16". The opening on my 13" wheels is 3 1/4".

Thanks for the info! Once I get the trailer, I'll definitely eyeball the hub myself. I'd love to use the wheels listed above!

Keep in mind that trailers usually use lug centric mounting unlike cars/trucks that use hub centric mounting.

That means the center hole does not matter on a trailer as long as it goes on. . With lug centric the wheel hole does not fit snugly; the lugs center the wheel and support the load.

I would definitely measure the hub diameter before buying wheels. I've found that the dimensions on these Chinese trailers can vary from one trailer to another even within the same brands.

Don't worry I will. Lol, the gentleman who's constructing my tear has a heart of gold and I've already thrown all of the custom options at him that I think is prudent. It's going to be a beautiful rig and I'm going to leave him alone the rest of the way.

Once I get it, I'll take a hard look at the wheels. I really want the baby moon look to complete it. I may even try to "rig" something with the stock Norther Tool wheels. It's all a process anyways. Gives me something to play with...
