Grease Cap Installation Tool

I hate grease caps. They never seemed to be tooooo hard to put on my Harbor Freight hubs. But my Dexter hubs seem to be much more difficult!! Botched up 2 grease caps trying to replace the dented ones that came with my new axle.

So I went to Lowe's and dug through the plumbing aisles until I found two cheap pieces:

a 1.5" cleanout plug and a 2" x 1-1/2" bushing (threaded)

(assembled on the left, pieces on the right)



Screw the cleanout plug into the bushing and you have yourself a nice compact grease cap installation tool, for the pricey sum of $1.70.

Should work for most 2000-3500lb rated hubs (with the 1.98" dust caps, which I believe is standard for small trailers).

I always say..."It's only a stupid idea if it doesn't work". Good thinking... I can relate to the problem you solved.

For the grease/dust caps I work with (VW) a section of 2 inch ID, ABS works well.... Never though of coupling and plug... Good upgrade over my tool....
