Hub Flange Size?

Postby 2one8 » Mon May 02, 2022 7:06 am

When looking at Flexiride half axles they have two hub flange sizes, standard and 6 1/2" for wheels up to 15 inches. I've never realized there were two sizes of hubs, why the difference? I'm assuming its for larger mating surface area. Can a guy still mount 15" wheels to the standard hubs later on if he decided to make the switch?

A guess, as is typical with other types of axle, that the larger hub has larger bearings, and therefore can carry more load in keeping with larger/higher load rated wheels.

Probably a stronger spindle version, too.

2one8, w/o knowing any more than you posted above ... there are 2 styles/designs of simple hubs and they correspond with the spindle design and weight capacity

if i'm GUESSING the "standard" units you refer to fit 1" spindles which are rated for 2000#/set of 2 = one axle

these smaller units aren't always built with brake flanges if those are important to you and your project

this pic just shows the bare spindle n hub assemblies prior to making up an axe

the larger units are mated to heavier/stepped spindles which accommodate heavier bearings all rated for 3500#/set of 2 = one axle

here is a 3500# set and you can see the difference in the shape of the spindle and size of the bearings

the smaller spindle/hub assemblies can accommodate either 4 lug on 4" diameter or 5 lug on 4.5" diameter wheels

the larger spindle/hub assemblies can accommodate either 5 lug or 6 lug diameter wheels

the 4 lug/4" diameter bolt pattern can be found on 8" and 12" trailer wheels

the 5 lug pattern can be found on 8" n 12" n 13" n 14" and 15" trailer wheels

the 6 lug pattern is found on 15" and larger wheels

check the weight designations and if what you are ordering has brake flanges before you order/buy to make sure you end up with what you need/desire for your project

hope this helps

Sorry, I guess I assumed folks would be familiar with the options since I've noticed a few manufactures list the same.

According to the specs sheets both hub options are a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, both use a 1 1/16" spindle with the same bearing part numbers, and for the 2,000lb half axles. Only difference that I can find anywhere is the flange size, and the description literally just says "with 6 1/2" hub flange for up to a 15" wheel."

I tried calling Flexiride but was unable to get through to anyone, so I called Eastern Marine and they were unsure of the reason for the difference other than assuming it was for more wheel mounting surface area for larger wheels, and the other size is for smaller utility trailer tires that have less clearance inside the wheel barrel.

I ended up ordering the larger size. I was worried that the smaller size would not support a larger wheel, and that the larger size would not be able to fit 12" trailer wheel should I ever need to fit one in a pinch, but I found a 12" and measured the inside of the wheel and they have plenty of room.
