Any pointers on my frame design.

Postby seangfy » Sun Jan 15, 2023 5:08 pm

I've been poking around as many frame building post as I could find trying to gather ideas after a few days on SketchUp this is what I've come up with. Building a 10x7 to tow behind our bronco sport which only has a 2200lbs tow capacity so weight is key but I don't want to skimp out on the frame. Any ideas or tips to possibly save weight would be great. Outer frame 2x2x.120 tongue, center cross member and the v angles 2x3x.120 and the two other cross members 2x2x120. As laid out approx 330 lbs. Before axles not planning on crazy off-road tips maybe gravel roads

Is the frame 7' wide, if so the bracing will be in the way of axle placement inside of the frame. By the time you get an axle springs and tires on you'll be at 25 percent of your tow capacity. Your frame design is dependent on the style your looking to build, what style are you looking to build?

Why the center spine AND diagonals? You can skip the center and just use the diagonal tongue pieces. Also consider that anything behind the axle mounts is only supporting the camper weight on top of it.

The rear diagonals aren't needed. You could put some short diagonals in the rear corners that would do the same, but again, I don't think they are needed either.

Typically, the tongue doesn't go beyond the first cross-member. What axel are you going to use?
