mounting torsion axles

Postby will guthrie » Mon Apr 09, 2007 11:48 pm

I just picked up a dexter axle i'd ordered for the widget that I'm slowly building and was uncertain about the best way to mount it to the chassis. The folks at the shop I bought the axle were'nt much help and so I perused back postings on the forum and realized I should have gotten an additional mounting bracket that gets welded to the chassis. Is this bracket made by dexter or can it be simply made with some angle iron? Is it inadviseable to simply bolt the axle through the 2 inch square tubing of the chassis using the 2 holes on the top of the axle mount? Perhaps doing so would deform the chassis tubing. I was kinda hoping I was through with welding for a while.

Will, thru drilling of the chassis tube to mount the axle is NOT recommended...this will cause the deformation you were talking about because of the forces attributed to the axle...you can weld the mounting tabs directly to the chassis(we did) BUT, if you should need to change the axle it will have to be cut off, you can order the proper piece of hardware from Dexter or you can make one yourself...you weld it to the chassis and bolt the axle to it...

Will, I bought the ones made for the axle. They fit perfectly, all the holes lined up, they were not that expensive and all the hardware was included. I did have to weld them to the frame myself.

P.S....I guess I should have added that after the first one we have bought the mounting bracket for the ones that have followed.....

Will,

I bought the Dexter brackets at the same time I bought the axle. They came bolted in place already. I set the axle in place and when it was where I wanted it, I clamped it down, and tack welded the brackets to my frame. I unbolted and removed the axle and finished welding the brackets in place. After painting, I just replaced the axle.

You should be able to get the brackets from Dexter bolt them onto the axle and then do the same thing.
