Steel weight calculater.

Postby Benthosboy » Tue Nov 27, 2007 4:53 pm

If this has been done before, my apologies are extended.

Then again, I am from Yorkshire, which is probably nearer to New York than New South Wales.
For what difference it makes.
I think.
:? :? :?

Does anyone know of anywhere on this damned accursed internet where I can get a weight/length calculater for angle and box section? All the sites I've found only seem to deal with solid bar and while I'm more than happy to hacksaw 3x2 box, I don't rlish the prospect of sawing the same in solid  Nor for that matter would I fancy towing a trailer with a chassis made of the stuff :)

Thankly dankly.

Martyn.

As Martyn is in Britain, he'll be wanting steel that's measured in good ol' British metric units, for which I'd recommend:
http://www.franklinsteelplc.co.uk/steel.htm

The only glitch to this for SHS (square hollow section - British for square tube) or RHS (yeah, rectangular hollow...) is that you have to pick between hot- and cold-rolled versions - I'm fairly sure the basic stuff is cold-rolled.

If you're thinking of buying from Metal Supermarkets, they still seem to work in inches and pounds even in the UK, but they quote a weight per foot for all their stuff:
http://www.metalsupermarkets.com

For US supplies, I find the easiest place to look for weights is:
http://www.onlinemetals.com
but you need to click through to the individual web page for an item to see the 'lineal weight' quoted.

Thankly dankly one and all. Just what I needed, although I liked the funny that's been slipped in. If the Sheffield steel boys find out that you chaps are claiming to make stainless steel, they'll be choking on their pints of Stones' Best, which as we're all aware goes down "great guns"

Oh, and by the way, what's "aluminum"?? Have you people no respect for the English language? I shudder to think what you refer to perspex as

I wrote a pretty comprehensive weight calculation program a few years ago. It even keeps track of calculations for an assembly of different shapes, including cavities.

I've been selling the program for $15, but any teardroppers who send me an email can have it free. Look at the limited demo and, if you like it, let me know. I'll send the full version to you.

Ah, the British/Canadian love of the extra letter, like the "u" in "colour"... I assume we're talking about "aluminium" here, right?

And Perspex is, of course, a pale foreign imitation of Plexiglas!

That one actually means the same thing. On the other hand, for a laugh, if you don't have an alarm clock try asking someone to "knock you up in the morning"... that one does not have the same meaning!
