Tongue extension?????

Postby blood_sweat_guts_101 » Fri Feb 15, 2008 9:45 pm

Hello all!!!

I want to extend a 4'x4' hf trailer tongue. My trailer is going to be 4' x 6' or 5' x 6' I have not decided that yet. But I was wondering how I could extend the tongue without any welding? is it possible???anyone have any advice or drawings????

Thanks,

Scott

If you're going to expand the HF 4 X 4 trailer to 5 X 6 and extend the tongue, you'll need an all new tongue of the next larger size tubing . . . . or at least a heavier gauge tube (thicker walls) of the same size

You're taking it to places it wasn't designed for and a broken tongue is probably in your immediate future if you don't resize it . . . .

NA ! Been there done that !

I used a 9' piece of 2x2x3/16 sq tube. Run it front to back catching all of the cross members. By doing this you are spreading the loads on all of the members not just the front 2. This is why failure is a concern the greater leverage of a longer tongue will exert more up force on the front member and greater down force on the 2nd. If you shaer it with all 4 there is even less stress on each member than the little short stock tongue.
All you will need are a supply of 3 1/2 " grade 8 bolts and nuts and a good sharp drill and the wrenches to install. Your stock coupler will mount on the 2" tube. If you let a little stick out the rear you can use the 2" hitch accessories like bike racks ect. Your little trailer will pull much better and you will for the first time actually be able to back it up.
Growing older but not up !
