Thinking about building my own teardrop

Postby chgrsteve67 » Wed Mar 26, 2008 2:41 pm

I'm thinking about buying a kit and building my own teardrop.

this company is about 50 miles from me and I think I will stop by to check on them.
http://www.teardroptrailers.net/
Has anyone here dealt with them or their product?

The do it yourself kit is what I am looking at ( a bit down the page ).
http://www.teardroptrailers.net/parts/t ... ailers.htm
It does not come with the wood or skin.

I can see the price for wood will depend on what type of wood one chooses to use. I'm wondering what those of you on this site that have built your own trailers have paid for the aluminum skin.

Also what tools do you recommend using to cut and shape the aluminum?

Thanks in advance

Hold on, let me go click on your links and see what I can see...

I'll be back!

Is this the kit you are talking about?

Are you planning on 4' wide? Have you read the threads and seen the polls on the 5' wide ones?

I have not found the threads on the 5' wide ones yet, I'm still looking around and reading. If you could tell me where they are at I will gladly read them.

I haven't bought anything yet I'm still educating myself on what I'm about to get myself into. I also have a 10 foot boat trailer in the yard that I'm thinking about using but it will need some work to get it road worthy again and has small trailer tires. The kit (even though it cost a little more) will save me some time and provide a few short cuts that will hopefully make my first experience at building a teardrop a little less frustrating.

At lease thats the general thought process at the moment.

I would have a look at these for starters...

There's more where that came from... do a search on 5' wide

Steve if you go to the 4-5 wide poll you can click on the albums or www's of most. That will let you look at the build. Also check out the Hall of Fame.

Thanks guys.

I read through the posts on 4 vs. 5 and if I was planing on sleeping the in the teardrop I think I would go the 5' wide route.

I actually prefer sleeping in a tent and my wife prefers sleeping in a hotel or motel. I plan on using the teardrop to haul my crap around in rather than loading it in my car. (canopy, electric scooter, chairs, luggage, cooler and so on).

Most likely my teardrop won't even have a kitchen area in the back.

I do not have a completely closed mind to the 5' tear route but I don't think its going to be a major decision for my build or purchase. Total width is also a concern of mine, with the 5' tear I would end up with almost a 7' wide trailer.

I appreciate the information and suggestions, keep em coming.

That's RW Johnson, I should know I just saw him today. He sells kits and parts. Seems to be a nice dude, give him a call before ordering, he tells me that website's prices need to be updated. (530) 878-0407.Good luck if you build it yourself, I think it means more in the long run, you can tell everyone you built it from the ground up. What part of Elk Grove do you hail, got a brother that lives there, plus I'm just up here in Sac. 8)

Steve

If you built it on a 4' wide trailer you would not be adding any width to the overall trailer.

You will find the group here has lots of ideas and love to give help. Just keep askin' the questions.

RW Johnson is just north of Auburn a couple miles. Call him before the visit to make sure he'll be there and to check prices. I was there couple months age and will be going for fenders soon. :applause:

Thanks for he tip.

I'm going to get more of the structure together so I can have some measurements of how big my trailer is before going up there for pieces and parts.

IF the Fuel Injection guy is a no show this weekend I'm do some more work on the hitch and trailer.

I think I have my wheels figured out but I'm going to wait a bit on that.
Gota few bills to pay off first.
