Trailer maintenance

Postby asianflava » Fri May 16, 2008 10:26 am

Got the trailer out yesterday in preperation for the campout at Piney Creek, North Carolina. I gave it a once over and noticed a lot of end play with the wheels. The trailer has about 10K on it (I'm guessing) and I've never done the hubs since buying the axle.

Since we're living in a hotel right now, a full blown repack is out of the question. I jacked up the wheel and spun it, then I tightened the nut till the tire stopped, then I backed it off a flat.

I ended up tightening both hubs about the same amount, one turn and 2 flats.

Will this be OK to travel? We are leaving today.

Rocky, keep a good check on the heat of the hub when you head out...make sure there is no excess heat(stop and check often at the beginning)...you know what excess heat means...

The local cargo trailer dealer charged me $40 to repack my bearings on my horse trailer. I didn't have time and that seemed like a reasonable amount to pay for the service.

Checked it after about an hour of highway driving, hubs felt normal. I guess I'll leave it like this till I'm able to repack them.
