dust seals

Postby ADK » Sat May 24, 2008 5:27 am

In the process of re-packing my wheel bearings I have discovered two problems. The bearings themselves are pretty much standard size but the grease seals are not. Consequently the dust caps, which are non-existent are not a standard size either. I do not know the heritage of this trailer so I cannot go back to the manufacturer for info.
I think that NAPA can cross reference my seals (no markings on the seals.)but absolutely no luck on dust caps, any suggestions? The ID hub size mikes out to 2.0625"

A 53mm dust cap might fit if the edge has enough of a taper to get it started. It is about 14 thousandths of an inch bigger than your hub opening. It is an older GM size.

Find someone with a lathe, have them open the ID of the hub to accept a slightly larger than original dust cap. I had to bore the hubs on my trailer for the same reason.

Thanks Kevin & Steve, I believe I have found a source that may have what I need and may also be useful info for others with the same issue. RedTrailer at http://www.redtrailers.com has a dust cap for 2.0625" hubs and grease seals for the same. I have not ordered yet, I am going to send an e-mail with my technical questions and see if in fact they are correct.
