Dexter "Center"

Postby jjlentz » Sat Aug 01, 2009 9:51 am

I hope this isn't a stupid question but I thought that I had better make sure. Using the trailer balance spread sheet I have determined the location of my axle. My frame is all jigged up, square and level. I have a weldor scheduled to come over and make it permanent on thurs.. The question is .....which part of my dexter torflex axle do I position at the determined location for the correct balalnce...the "center of the axle" or the "center of the spindle"???????

Thanks Jeff

The center of the spindle. The axle just holds the two sides together. :D Danny

The center of the spindle is the correct location.

I might as well come clean as I've alluded (in other posts) to what I consider a big mistake I made from the "git-go".

According to my original KC plans, it showed the measurement from the rear of the trailer to the center of the axle, it also showed the idlers facing to the front of the trailer. Well, I knew the idlers shouldn't face the front, so I got that right, but now the spindles are 34" from the rear of my 13' 6" long trailer.

Result? Right now my trailers weighs in at ~700#, and the tongue-weight is already 170#. I still need to install the roof, A/C in the front, and a battery in the front, and the front bulk-head. :x

I'm sure those things are going to add considerable weight, but oh well, guess I'll pull the TD with my truck.

To their credit, KC has revisions for their plans on their website. They did address the axle location snafu, but I didn't check into the revisions until after I already built my frame!

The answers are all correct - it is the spindle position.

But I'd like to point out that I feel cheated - I intentionally used "wheel centre" on the spreadsheet in the hope that it would avoid this confusion!

Andrew,

You should feel "cheated" I've used so much of the information that you have gathered and posted on this forum that you should be earning a paycheck... I realized the spreadsheet indicated the wheel center, but between my dexter paperwork refering to "axle, spindle center" and my kuffel creek comet plans not being very clear on this part I needed to clear it up.

Thanks!!! For all that you do and your attention to detail!!

Good luck with your Comet build. Wished I'd've asked this question before building my Comet's frame.
