Canned ham on a pop up frame.

Postby RN » Wed Aug 05, 2009 8:15 pm

I recently purchased a used pop up, 1969 Starcraft Constellation, that my wife and I want to build a functional canned ham. By functional I mean that it will be used for sleeping and hanging out in the AC. The canned ham will be able to sleep 4 thanks to bunk beds and have storage. We plan on using the bath house for those purposes and cook outside on grills and stoves. A small refrigerator will be inside the camper also. What do you guys think? Sounds fun to me!  :)

Welcome RN,

I built my Standie on a 1980 Coleman. Turned out the tongue was a little wimpy but I'm guessing the older camper had a stronger frame, mine was mostly about 1/16". I also am about 2200 lbs with all the amenities. Keep it light and you should be fine. If I built another it would be simpler, possibly no built in kitchen. A camp stove and plastic dishpan work fine. I would think about a portapottie. People have different needs but the wife enjoys not having to go outside for night water. Take a look at my album for some ideas. mine has a 12' body on a 8.5' frame.

I need a new Avatar. I'd put my dog up there but she doesn't look much like me. She's the skinny one.

Yeah, I am planning on cooking outside under an easy-up. We plan on camping in campgrounds so the bath house will be used for showering and toileting. I want the inside to be for sleeping, watching a DVD in the rain, or for playing board or card games in the AC. I also plan to incorporate alot of storage compartments on the inside. The tongue on this one looks to have been jack-knifed at one point in it's life. It is also a 1 7/8" in size. I want to change that to a 2". Thanks for the advice.

Congratulations on your Starcraft, I purchased a 1970 something model that already had the "can" torn off. I had the frame narrowed and have put the floor on but I'm trying to decide on a design now.
