Illinois 2009 Trailer Title Information

Postby Hillbilly Gene » Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:51 pm

The following website gives the Illinois RV Trailer Title details:

http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/ ... /home.html

It would seem the "TA Trailer" is NOT the one needed for any two-wheel trailer because the description says "so constructed that no part of its weight rests upon the towing vehicle", which I assume means the tongue. Must be for Hay Wagon Rides?

The correct Illinois plate for teardrops would be the "Recreational Trailer" plate. These plates can also be "vanity plates" for an extra (hefty) fee
Someone has to pay for the past governor :fb

I went into the DMV with a picture of my teardrop. The guy asked who made it? I said I did. He said that will be $18.00 for a years plate. There was a small title fee as well. Could not have been easier. Title just says "Homemade" on it. They had no interest in how well it was made, or even if the lights worked or anything. I was quite surprised.

Here in Washington (State) the easiest way to build a teardrop and license it is with a Fred Meyer, Bi Mart, Redtrailers, or Harbor Freight trailer frame. Just take your receipt and trailer certificate into the DMV and license it as a utility trailer. There's no inspection or anything. You can chop, cut, and rebuild that frame however you like as long as you still have that VIN tag on it.

For a homebuilt trailer it's still easiest to license it as a utility trailer. For that you need to take all your receipts, an official weigh in sheet, and your trailer to the WA State Patrol. They'll inspect it and stamp it with VIN. I think those are registered as homemade trailers but they're still just fine once titled.
