wear and tear on wheels

Postby timlsalem » Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:54 am

I'm wondering how to stop the wear and tear on 5.30x12" tires. I am in the process of building another 4x8 TD, my 3rd one. The last two I had problems with wear on the tires after towing it 2000 miles. They were DOT rated with leaf springs.

Bigger wheels.

Slower speeds.

Better tires.

Correct alignment.

Tim,

Welcome to the forum :shake hands:

Things move pretty quickly on this forum. Try and keep up.

What kind of tire wear?

What kind of load vs. spring rating?

Was it on a stock trailer and did you move the axle back?

What kind of tire pressure did you maintain?

Some here have had issues with Chinese tires, although others have not.

Wall-Mart tires is about all I need to here. I worked in the WM Tire shop back in college. Thiere tires are all crap. Even thier brand name tires are junk. Go to Wall-Mart, look at the tire rack, they have a Good Year Viva 2 tire. Go to the Good Year dealer and ask for a Viva 2, you will get told to get your butt out and go to Wall-Mart. I made a joke about it whle I was still working there and almost got fired over it.

Thanks for all the input. The tires I have now came with the HF trailer. They will do for now but after my build I will switch them out for 14" tires. My trailer has a 5 bolt pattern with 2000# axle and I found a bolt pattern chart online I can print out which shows me the correct 14" rim to get that will fit my pattern. I plan to do this before I put my custom made fenders on.

My h/f tires on #1 went 30k miles with no problems... if you only got 2k, you might have a bent axle...

If the axle has been moved perhaps the diagonals were not checked.

Put a dot on the center of the coupler cup front lip. Then measure form there 1st to right and to the left. I used the inside front u bolt as my target. If your measurements are off much more than 1/4 inch you will be pulling off center aggrivating tire wear.

The tires that were wearing out were from walmart. The frame I have now is from HF and the tires look to be a better grade. Will see and keep you posted.
