Tow bar

Postby Dummy » Thu May 27, 2010 12:45 pm

I am currently in the heavy thinking (planning) stage and wondered if anyone has ever used a tow bar on their teardrop.

I am looking to build lightweight and on the small side and this would allow for less storage space and possibly an earier trailer frame design. It would also let me build basically square or rectangular frames and use one tow bar to connect them all.

If you mean put a receiver hitch on front of TB.... Yes its been done sorta.... Some have put one on tongue as sort of a anti-theft device (easily removed "hitch")....

You could use it as a removable tongue, I'm just not sure if the "normal" 2 inch square stock (steel tube) is strong enough to use as a tongue though.... Usually its better with something like 3 inch X 3 inch, but you could build a "receiver" for the larger tubing.....

Some boat trailers use a large tube use a "tongue extension" for boat launching.....

I used the 1 1/4" x 24 long tube and bolted it to the TSC frame. I added a 2 x 2 x 1/4" angle as an added cross member. Plenty strong for a bike rack.

having the four bikes and the rack on the back of the cargo tear gives me 10# of tongue weight.

I don't have enough camping cargo to throw up front to offset the weight. Two bikes works fine.
