Spare tire wheel adapter

Postby Shadow Catcher » Sun Oct 31, 2010 6:44 am

I have been thinking (I know dangerous) and would like to carry a spare tire that can be used on the tow vehicle and trailer. Since the TV is a Subaru and the wheels/tires must be the same size due to the AWD VDC system it must by default be size. the trailer Has 14" (Dexter) the car 16" both five bolt different pattern. Can an adapter be used safely for spare tire use? only.

Wheel adaptors, wheel spacers and combination wheel adaptor/spacers are used by some people full-time without incident, but the bulk of the material comprising the spacer must be at the minimum a high-quality aluminum alloy and the spacer/adaptor's wheel lug studs a quality steel.

I currently have only one link saved; check and see if your desired fitment is available:

Good luck, sir!

This is one occasion where wheel spacers would be entirely sensible and not a weak point at all.

Your trailer, assuming it has trailer wheels, will want zero-offset wheels but your Subaru probably has inset wheels (ie, the hub face is nearer the outside of the wheel than the inside).

So the right thickness spacer would allow the Subaru wheel to fit in the right place on the trailer, as well as adapting between the two bolt patterns. Much of the criticism of wheel spacers is because they can put the wheel in the wrong place (eg, overhanging the hub), but in this case they would be the only way to put it in the right place.

I use wheel adapters on my jeep to widen the stance by 1 1/2 " on each corner. Since my Cherokee has a suspension lift, in order to meet our local rules regarding height from frame to ground on lifted vehicles the stance needed to be a bit wider which gives back some of the stability lost by just lifting the vehicle. They are made in the USA by a company called Spydertrax. They come in a variety of widths and also adapter sizes. They include the high strength bolts and red loctite to first fasten to your vehicles hubs. Torque to 90 ft lbs and then mount your wheels.

I used some wheel spacers to adapt different rims to an autocross car, which saw some serious side loads to the wheel and axle without serious incident.

One and a half inches out on all four corners, and I never noticed any side effect except the increased handling.

Shop around, I think mine were fifty apiece.

This might help. I had been looking for a way to use 5x100 (5 lug, 100 mm spacing) Subaru wheels on my trailer, but didn't find any trailer hubs to match. The following I believe would let you use Subaru wheels on a 5x4.5" trailer hub.

The adapters work fine. As stated above make sure they are high quality billet alluminum and machined. Cast aluminum adapters can have voids and weak spots in the castings.

The adapters referenced above are very good quality.

Remember. If you buy cheap you get cheap.
