Trailer Size Question for Grumman2 5'x10'

I love the look of the Grumman2, and the plans are really nice, but I have a question...

Why do most people who build these put the 5ft frame on a 4ft trailer? Is there a good reason I'm not considering, other than the price/availability of 5ft as compared to 4ft trailers?

Having the wheel well in there really messes up the mattress situation it seems.

Simplified question, would there be a disadvantage to buying/fabricating a true 5x10 flatbed and building the Grumman2 on top with the tires sticking out to the side instead of being recessed into the frame?

This is exactly what I did. Our camper is based upon the Grumman 2 profile. We put a queen size mattress inside and pushed the wheels out to the exterior. It some ways, it makes the build easier as you don't have to build around the wheels.

Awesome. Glad I wasn't the only one wondering that.

Seems like it would be much easier to build, and you wouldn't have to worry about having a bed with wheel wells cut out of the sides.

Axle is 51" from rear
Two cross members (should have done 3)

When I built the barn I cut the side rails off except at the wheel wells and framed over the little vee's that were left of the front and side rail supports. I bolted the 2" plus bottom wall plate thru this vee with large washers This put my wall outboard of the floor so I have an honest 60". My fenders are neither in board or outboard about 3" of the fender is in the wall.


the 5x8 as it arrived bought it used for $250.00


In this pic you can see the little vee on the front rail cut flush with the floor. In the foreground is the bottom wall plate bolted thru the side vee. Don't mind the wiggle it was just a goofy camera it is NOT crooked.

Well it should have , the guy in the picture IS several years younger !

That's my buddy Mark he helped on the project for several days. He may make it down for a visit at the CRA.
