Boat Trailer

Postby mikencfl65 » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:47 am

I am about to build a tear drop.
Has anyone ever used a boat trailer?
Seems they would be very sturdy.

I ask this because I can get them used at a better price.

Here is one I am looking at
Any feedback would be wonderful

Thank you Mike

I'm using one now. It's been 2yrs now and it works great. You may have to weld some angle iron across the back and where the front of the teardrop will be. The axle can be moved to adjust for weight. Check the weight load of the trailer but most boat trailers are beefy and not mention a dime a dozen. :D

I'm building one right now, although mine is quite a different design as far as the trailer goes. As you say they are cheap and plentiful, at least in some areas! Good luck. I would think the "V" shape frame would loan itself to all types of storage options. Here's my build thread, tho I haven't gotten too far!

They can be made to work great (as seen in this forum), but one of the key things is how easy it is (or isn't) to shorten the overly long tongue. On the one you are showing the front wish bone portion of the frame looks like it sticks forward quite a bit with less tongue sticking out than some others that I have seen. Looks like a nice trailer, but you may want to take a minute to figure out your desired cabin and tongue lengths, then figure your axle placement, and see if these are easily accomodated by any trailer cannidate.

On my boat trailer

the frame doesn't sweep forward as far and the tongue would be much easier to shorten.

Generally the axles can be moved around quite a bit, by design (there are usually a lot of extra mounting holes) so you will want to compare where the 'Y' is to how short the tongue needs to get, to where the axle can be, and then see if you need to shorten (or lengthen) the rear of the frame.

Does that make sense? (babbling)
