Got an axle to grind

Postby Colorado_Carter » Wed Jun 20, 2012 1:02 pm

I am currently stuck on the axle-there is alot of info in here so far. When i started the design I went off other suggestions in this forum so I am hoping someone has this info readily available. I have a F-150 and a crossover as tow vehicles and would like something for moderate offroad use but generally just highway use.

I am considering using a 2000# flexride torsion axle with 205/70 R15 rims/tires. Has anyone done this? What is the final ride height at the optimal preset angle? are the Flexride Torsion Axles adjustable like the half axles are supposed to be? If so what range of heights might I expect? If I use 1/2" plywood outside the frame will there be an issue with rubbing?

Here is the frame so far-Welded and Painted just needs some sweet wheels.

Given a choice I would use the Flexride, I have a Dexter.

I have a flexiride axle. I have the axle arms set parallel to the ground, which is the optimum angle for a soft ride. I have 205/75R14 tires and it's 17" from the ground to the bottom of the frame. I love the flexiride axle, I've tweaked my ride height twice as my trailer doesn't have the same weight on each tire and the torsion axles settle over time.

No problem with the wheels rubbing, each wheel is independent and the wheels don't angle in over bumps. The built in damping action means the trailer settles down better then a spring suspension on bumps.
