My tongue is too long ;-)

Postby CARS » Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:51 am

I've been working on my "New Cub" tear for a couple years now

Last summer I discovered that my original donor trailer just wasn't going to work, but the rotting pop-up trailer we used until last year, has the perfect axle width, has a title, and is paid for. It was something like 14' long... but I have tools to cut it down

Problem is when I placed the cabin right where it says it should go according to the plans http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/t ... tear27.htm , the tongue should be 4' from the first crossmember (front floor). I'm at 6' 3".

I know my galley is going to carry most of the weight. I'll load the gear over the axle as much as possible. But what will a longer tongue do to my tongue weight??

Here is the cabin on the frame:

Axle is right where it should be:

I had to cut the front off of the frame because the old camper was a couple feet farther forward (had to cut a few feet off the back too). I will box this in soon before it leaves the garage:

And finally, the tongue... The bottle mounts will be removed as will the winch to raise the old top. I still have to go through the surge brakes.

Going from 4' to 6'3" is no big problem for balance - it sounds like a big change but it's the difference in the lengths from the axle to the coupler that affect the hitch weight and that hasn't altered by anything like the same percentage. The longer tongue will make the trailer a bit more stable, so the slight loss in hitch weight won't reduce towing stability.

The other side to the question is: is the frame's tongue/A-frame strong enough? Going from 4' to 6'3" increases the load on the tongue by 50%, but from looking at your frame, I doubt it will have a problem as it was probably carrying twice the weight before as a pop-up.

Balance and weight distribution issues aside, a longer hitch to axle length (i.e., tongue length) makes backing the trailer easier.

My tongue is 7 feet long and backing the trailer is a cinch.

A nice storage box in front of the tear sounds like the way I would go.
