Actual Completed Trailer Weight Measurements

Postby 55chevy » Sat Feb 02, 2013 11:20 am

I've searched around and I have been able to find some posts and build threads where folks have posted their trailer weights. But, I thought I would start a thread to see if I could get some actual weight measurements, with or without cargo after the trailer was completed.

If you respond, please add a reference pointing to your trailer build or trailer structure. This will help others compare their structure to your completed project.

I think having a central list of actual trailer measurements would make it a lot easier for newbies like myself to design there chassis and suspension.

If there is a list already out there that I have overlooked, please let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

I doubt you'll get too many responses with multiple weights for their teardrops. Many here have never weighted their trailers and a few others like me needed to build light due to tow restrictions and may have weighed their trailer several times. If you are concerned about weight I can assure you that the small details will add big on an item as large as a teardrop as well as the accessories you choose to add. They can be built very light but the devil is in the details. I have a neighbor that about once a week would say "well that won't save but a couple of pounds" and I don't think he understands today why I would choose a much more difficult build technique to save a small amount of weight but he drives a 4 x4 large truck that would not have and issue with the extra weight. (he also doesn't get 30 plus miles to the gallon of fuel towing)

Thanks for the reply and advice to keep it light.

I'm going to delete this thread if I can find out how!

Actually I think this is a good thread.
My trailer is approx 500lbs, which includes the frame, foamie shell and memory foam mattress. i have never weighed it with gear. the frame itself is 265lbs. :wine:

I don't know how many actual weights will show up but this is a topic very important to many of us both veterans and newbies. My 4 x 9 is I guess a "semi foamie" as it has a cedar frame and foam walls with floated aluminum. I have a fairly dense 6" foam mattress and a lot of toys and extras built into my build that helps explain a 1000 lb loaded weight (a basic unit would be much lighter). I started another build and abandoned it with the floor and frame completed because it was getting too heavy even in such and early stage of completion. On my current build I used cedar for all wood and biscuits and dowel pins instead of metal fasteners to save weight and also cedar stripped the interior sub 1/8" to save weight. Its made over 11,000 miles since last spring without a hint of any kind of failure. It is amazing how strong a sandwich constructed tear is given the relatively individually weak materials used in construction.

I weigh all my campers. I think it is important to know, especially if you are towing with a smaller tow vehicle.
Most of the "Kit Mfg" clones come in around 700# empty, 4x8, aluminum over plywood. The original Kits are about 675.
My 5x10 teardrops are about 1100#. My 5x11 wood strip Touring Lodge is 1400# dry, and after pillow top mattress, fridge, tongue box, and loaded for camping is 1800#. My Whetzeldorfs , 6.5x8, are 1200# dry, and the original Metzendorf they are copied from is 1410# dry.

If you have a bathroom scale you can measure the weight of a trailer as long as it does not max the scale. I believe most bathroom scales read up to 300lbs. so if you think your trailer is much above 800 it may not work. Just place the scale under each wheel and the tongue and add each total up to get your weight. I use to help my neighbor to weigh his ultra light airplane he was building this way.

There's a lot of useful information HERE
Anjib made up a chart sometime ago with a list of weights of different sized teardrops and averaged them out.

Danny: thanks for that last post, I couldn't find the averages you mentioned earlier.

Also, Thanks to all who posted their weights and comments. I feel pretty good with my estimate to build a Benroy 5x10 for in the 1100 to 1400 lb range. I order my Dexter #9 today and requested a tune of 1800. :frightened:

Gee Whiz! This weight thread was so close to that last one that I thought you weren't happy with the information that I provided and were looking for only those that had been put on scales or something else. I didn't know you were looking for my chart! Sorry about that.

As you probably know, the chart was compiled in November of 2009 and that was before foamies where being made; so, it does not include information on foamie builds. When I posted it recently, I left off some of the background as the scanner wouldn't pick it up. For the record and so you have it all, in case you want to verify it, here is where the data is that I compiled the information from:

* Averages are based on information taken at 12:31 PM PST on 11/21/09 from two threads:
User Poll Thread: What does your teardrop weight?
General Discussion: Whats the size and weight of your teardrop
* The content of this chart is subject to human error; however, please be aware that:
- If someone was kind enough to answer both threads, effort was made to eliminate duplicates.
- If size was not given, that weight could not be used.
- If inches were given, they were dropped/rounded to feet.
- If more than one weight was given, the highest weight was used.
- If a category has only one entry, that will be its "average".
