Another HF Bearing and Grease Seal Saga

Ask questions about Harbor Freight trailers, or questions about building your own...

I found replacement bearings and grease seals for my Harbor Freight 90154 trailer by going to their website, then typing in the trailer number (90154 in my case) into the "item number" search box. This brings up the web page for the trailer. Near the bottom of the page is a green box labeled "Download Product Manual". Click on that and you'll download a manual with a parts list as well as an assembly diagram with cross references to the parts list. When you call customer service, you'll have the info you need to get the correct parts.

To remove the seal and inner bearing, first remove the castle nut, washer, and outer bearing. Then reinstall the nut only. Pulling straight pop the hub out leaving this (the trailer is secure on safety stands right?).

Yes this works very well and is an old mechanic's trick.... But the thing of interest to me is the axle mounting in this picture...I'm no expert, but I have never seen an axle mounted with 1 u-bolt as the picture shows, nor have I ever seen where you could purchase this type of set up. Maybe some one can "edjamacate" me. It appears that everything is captured and bound in a forward motion, but to me 2 u-bolts and a square plate is just better and stronger, that would certainly make me feel better going down the road. :D

That is not an uncommon arrangement for axles with low load ratings.

That is the way I bought the trailer, and it worked well for over ten years (only axle I have everseen like this too). However when I changed to an axle with brakes it got two per side. Guys building ultra lights, if you can find a supplier, may save the weight of two u-bolts.

The apache tent trailer I used as a base for Rip VanWinkle, my 4x7 teardrop, had the same set up.

From my original post...........

Here is the underside , note the single u bolt around
the axle on each side . It shocked me a bit too !
Growing older but not up !
