It appears that most builders use a sub-frame under the floor. You could build your sub-frame to over hang the trailer frame. I would recommend half lap joints on the sub-frame. Run your 10' members on the bottom, and the five foot members on the top (half lap). This should make a frame sturdy enough to stand the test of time.

The lap joint is a good idea. I will be using "pocket holes" on almost all my corner and cross member subfloor frame. My test joints seem to be real strong. Am just now starting my first build.

I just bought a 4x8 HD but I need a 6x10 1/2 (still not set on length or width). I was thinking since the 4x8 is really 2 4x4's It would be easiest to weld the extra length in the middle and redrill the axle bracket holes. Anyone have a link to page fore balencing a trailer?

Steve Cox I totally stole this picture for my cabin car on an HF 4 x 8. Thank you for posting this. I will be inverting the hitch bracket and doing the extended tongue trick on mine! Thanks again for the picture!

What about building a 4 x 10 on a 4 x 8 trailer? Can it be done without a lot of reworking?

Not too much rework on this one. 2 of the cross members used in the sides to extend them and the axle moved back. Had to drill a few holes. Actual frame length 117", 2X4 on each end during the build brought the length to 10 feet.
