And it's not been designed to be strong enough to withstand that.

Tom, what you're asking for is to put a joint at the most highly-loaded point in the whole chassis, so the joint design needs to be able carry the full bending load of the tubes involved, plus also it mustn't vibrate when being towed. That Eco-tourer joint is a nice design but there's some serious engineering involved in making and assembling it.

If you want an A-frame, then I think the easiest way is simply to double up WarPony's removable tongue, with the sockets pointing straight ahead and the rails cranking inwards just in front of the sockets. Sliding two parallel tubes into sockets won't be near as easy as one, but at least it's all home-buildable which most folding A-frame ideas won't be.
