One of the Dexter sites shows maximum deflection in some drawings. That's how I came up with how big to make the notch.

Dexter #9 and #10 have a 22.5 deg angle from 'unloaded' to 'full load' and then another 10 deg from 'full load' to 'shock load'.

So a 45 deg down start angle will give a 22.5 deg down full load angle and a 12.5 deg down shock load angle.

Dexter recommend 3" of bump clearance from full load, but don't specify where that clearance is needed! A little over 1" of that clearance will be used up by the movement from full load to shock load.

I did a little more snooping and found the above info. It may also be on the Dexter site, but I have never found it. If you look at the drawing at the top of the page that link points to, you'll see the hubface to inner torsion arm spec shown as 6.2" and is not variable.
So there is a vital bit of info for anybody building their own frame!

I bought my #9 axle today. $161. I actually got it from the guys above, Redneck Trailer, they have a distributorship near me. I got the standard spindles, as they didn't offer the short spindles, I could have pressed the issue, but with the 6.2" and I rounded up anther 1/2" on each side for the face to face total 77", with the bracket edge at 60". My body frame is 62.5", I think I will be fine. 10' Down starting angle, derated to 1500lbs. I will be sweating until it comes in...

My final drawing:

Looks like you've analyzed it as much as possible. I bet it'll work. That's a good price too. How long was the delivery estimated at?

I ordered mine yesterday finally. It'll come in at about $230 with the brackets. I was hoping for less $$ but freight to the middle of Maine from everywhere is expensive.
I made several drawings of how my floor and walls will be put together and figured out that a 22.5 or 45deg down angle will solve my wall clearance issue. So I'm getting a 71" hubface for my 60" wide trailer. Nice and slim is what I wanted.
Now it's all about waiting.

Good job! You're in it now! haha.. I wish my trailer was skinnier I measured the width of my truck fender to fender and it is 80" wide. the trailer will be 85" before the fenders. It will still look good going down the road :)

But the minimum overhang on a #9 is 6" per side, for a minimum difference between the mounting tab and the hub face dimention should be 12". Am I missing something? MY axel that I just had Dexter make is 58" on the hangers and 70" on the hub faces and there is not more than 1/4" of space between the inside of the tortion arm and the mounting bracket.

My 77" hub face, 60" frame Axle came in today, I will go pick up up on Friday, and will advise how it came out on mine, G-Force, please let us know how you're goes, I remember seeing 5.5" on the #8 Axle but the #9 was 6" minimum. Maybe with short spindles it changes?

Got the axle yesterday, welded the brackets to the frame today and got the rolling chassis complete. The dimensions came out absolutely perfect! 3/4" from tire to outside arm, and 3/4" from body to inside arm. (The board represents the side wall and trim)

PS: shoeman is getting the 71" not me :) Let us know how it goes for you too!

Woo hoo! I picked up my axle and will get to measuring stuff later today I hope. It took 4 weeks to get here and cost $241 with shipping. I'll be firing up the welder later this week to get the axle and tongue finished, then it's on to the body work.
I'll post the dimensions ans clearances I was concerned with in this thread real soon.
Fingers crossed! ;)
