Red Trailers 5x10 "teardrop trailer frame"

Postby cwm » Sat Dec 02, 2006 2:49 am

I was just checking out the red trailers site and noticed that they have a new 5x10 black trailer with 13" tires. They are taking pre-orders with a $100 deposit with delivery expected in late January. Since I am pretty sure that I want to build a 5x10 trailer I think this might be a good option. I am assuming that this model SJ-8535 will not be a folding trailer, does anybody know?

I was thinking about one of these, like the 13" wheels and non folding. I did notice that bed width is listed as 61" and am wondering why they went wider than 5'? If it was made for a treardrop why didn't they make it
58- 59"?

Was thinking about a Benroy profile, any ideas about the extra 2'? Would it be better to lengthen the body by two feet for more cabin space or use the standard 8" profile with maybe a full width storage box in front? Of course I could just get the 5 X 8 but that has 12" wheels.

It sounds like it was designed for towing 5' wide sheets of plywood. Hence the extra 1/2" on a side.

Will it still work for a teardrop or even a Generic Benroy. Absolutely.

You can build on top of the frame, or cover the frame, using 4x8 sheets of plywood cut to 61" or wider, depending on how wide your walls are.

Or you can cut the frame down and use wider fenders, so that you can use 60" baltic birch for your roof skins.

It's do-able, just use your imagination.

Mine has a queen bed in it. The bed is 60" wide so my tear is 63" wide to give me 60 inside. They must be alowing for the wall's.

Steve,

Thanks for the information, I think that one might work for me. Now I just need to make up my mind if I'm going to build an 8ft or a 10ft.

I believe, that when Len built on it, that he built 4' wide, set it down inside the frame and mounted it on top of washers to leave a gap for water to drain away...hopefully this is correct and Len will correct me if I am wrong....

If this trailer came with a 15' wheel, it would be perfect!

It's interesting that he's marketing this trailer as a "Teardrop Trailer Frame". Obviously, we're getting noticed as a viable market niche. The fact that he is offering 5x8 and 5x10 frames with solid side rails is a great boon to TD buildiers. I wish they were available when I built mine. Also, I noticed on the photo the wheels have a 5-bolt pattern. It should be easy to upgrade the wheels.

Relative prices, and values, of Red Trailers for teardrops

Postby Esteban » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:02 pm

A 5'x10' Red Trailer SJ-8535 is $599.95. It has with a 2000 lb. GVW (gross vehicle weight) with 13" wheels and it's frame is made from 2"x3"x2.5mm tube. The trailer weighs 415 lbs. and has a max. load capacity of 1585 lbs.

A 5'x8' Red Trailer SJ-8534 is $499.95. It has a 1560 lb. GVW with 12" wheels and it's frame is made from 2"x2"x2.5mm C channel. The trailer weighs 340 lbs. and has a max. load capacity of 1220 lbs.

A 5'x8' Red Trailer SJ-8534, upgraded to 2000 lbs. GVW, is $779.90 ($499.95 base price + $259.95 upgrade + $20.00 extra shipping). Upgraded it has a heavier duty axle and 13" wheels like the 5'x10'. It still has a lighter duty C channel frame. It's weight and load capacity were not shown on Red Trailer's web site. An upgraded 5'x8' costs $179.95 more than a 5'x10'. It's not a good value IMHO.

Wish they had that back in Sept. I stretched my 5X8 to10'. Actually when I ordered mine I suggested, I'm sure others did too, that they make a 5x10.

That axle looks a little too far forward to me. Any thoughts?
