HF Trailer licensing in Oklahoma

Postby mikewilson » Sun Jul 29, 2007 7:06 pm

I'm looking to take a trip up to Oklahoma city to get my HF trailer this week. Before I make that drive, can anyone help me with registration questions? I have previously did this in California and in Nevada and those were simple.

I brought in the temporary insurance card, manufacturers certificate of origin, and the trailer itself (fully assembled with deck and working lights). I also brought in the steel punch set and hammer I bought at HF.

In California I had to get issued a temporary registration and go to the highway patrol for an inspection, then drive back to the DMV with my safety inspection, sign a form for ownership pay some cash and done.

In Nevada I had to show a receipt and manufacturers certificate of origin. I paid the registration and license plate fees and was done in less than 1/2 hour.

What documents does the Oklahoma DMV require to obtain title and license plates? Should I initially register this as a utility trailer or wait until the TTT is complete? If anyone has any personal experience to the Oklahoma registration process that could be of help to me I would sincerely appreciate your assistance.

In Oklahoma they do not require plates for utility trailers. Also after talking to the local tag office they said You only need to have a tag for comercially built teardrops home built teardrops are in the utility trailer catagory so no liscense is nescessary. The tag office did give me a waiver that if stopped by the Hiway patrol out of state it explains that Oklahoma utility trailers do not require plates. That has been my experience and have had my teardop on the road for a year now.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I'll be making that trip this week to get the trailer, and a trip to one of the 3 tag agencies that I live in the middle of for that waiver. Thank you.
