Can you cut a HF trailer axle?

What is the diameter of the HF trailer axle?
(1740 LB CAPACITY SUPER DUTY 48" x 96" )
I would like to cut this in 1/2 and widen it to 5 feet.

I have done it on two axles (both h/f 1,800# trailers),, current one I'm using and new one I'm building.. ran a piece of square tubing across the gap, with holes drilled in appropriate places to 'plug weld' it.... as well as welded at the ends of the square tubing...

I do not recall the size of the tubing... had some in our scrap pile that worked out in both cases.... the overlap was at least 8 inches on each end in both cases.
