8" or 12 " wheels?

Postby deacon328 » Tue Sep 25, 2007 12:57 pm

This has probably been discussed before and if it has I apologize in advance. I am going to but a Harbor Freight trailer to build my tiny trailer. I wanted to know what the main difference between the 8" wheel and 12" wheel.

About 95% of the time this trailer will be pulled by my trike and on the highway or rural paved roads.

Thanks for any suggestions.

About 4"..

Seriously, I think there is a weight carrying issue and the larger tires will not spin as many RPMs so the bearings won't develop as much heat.

But don't quote me.. :D

If given the choice I would go with the larger tire.

Now that's funny.

I would go with the 12" wheel (for the reasons already mentioned).

X3. That doesn't mean that a trailer with 8" tires is a bad thing. There are a ton snowmobile trailers flying down the highway on 8" tires. If you like the looks and it fits your design, go for it!

Go with the 12". It'll look better, even behind a trike. never mind that it'll last longer... And you could tell your wife... oh never mind.

Doesn't the Puffin have 8" wheels? That's a nice looking trailer.
I had the choice of either the 8" or the 12" wheels, the 12" one was alot more expencive but that's what I wanted.

I think he did, but he basically hid them. While it is a nice looking trailer, when you see a shot of it that shows the wheels, they look totally out of place . . . . it would be a much nicer looking rig with 12 inch wheels, but I suspect they would have required an intrusion into the living space, so I suspect he used the 8's more for function and less for form

Probably about 8 pounds difference between the two sizes. Maybe a couple pounds diff between the fenders too.
Dont know if 20 pounds is significant when pulling with a trike.

If it were a VW trike I would go lighter, but I'm building a rear engine V8 monster pushing over 250 HP.

Thanks for the input everyone, I think I'll go with the 8" tires, I just can't see paying that much more for 12" tires. Not when I'm only using this trailer every other weekend.

The price difference can't be that much.

Looks like 12" then, I will just keep an eye out for a used one. I have a friend with a salvage yard who says he has some junked pop-up trailers. He said one of them has 13" tires, even better!!

Postby MARVIN THOMPSON » Sat Oct 27, 2007 6:58 pm

I HAVE A CHEVY TRIKE WITH A 2.8 LITER AND PULL A 12 FT POP UP AND NO TROUBLE. I TALKED TO A GUY IN BARSON THAT PULL A 16 TRIALER BEHIDE A V8 TRIKE. AS FOR TIRE,S. GO WITH THE 12 RUN COOLER . YOU MIGHT CONSIDER 14 OR 15 TO MATCH TRIKE ONE SPARE THAT WAY.
