Opinions on tire/fender combo,,,,,

Im wanting to build a 4x8 TD with a vintage look. I have an old motorcycle fender that fits the look nicely, and without modification it fits a 12" trailer tire nicely. A 13" is just a tad too wide, so on to my dilema. Since Im building for light weight Im thinkin the 12 is the way to go, also I have one already that can be used for a spare, and if I buy a HF trailer then theres my wheels. Im thinking I can bolt the fender to the axle so that it floats with the tire for a in the weeds look, but I wonder about the gap between the body of the TD and fender. If I bolt the fender to the body it might be better to just cast my own in fiberglass so that they will flush mount, but that brings up the question that if Im going to glass them, then maybe it would be better to widen them to accomodate larger tires.

CL, you could certainly fab a mount to the axle but would have to compensate for movement...up/down...in/out. A better choice might be to fab a mount to the trailer frame itself, that way the fender stays in one position and you don't have to worry about clearance for movement...one problem for either of those methods is the amount of vibration that would be transferred into the mount and the fender, possibly causing a failure...as a fix for that, you could drill the fender and use spacers/standoffs to hold the fender off the wall compensating for the shape of the fender...and by the way, those fenders would look very cool onna TD..........

It's not a big deal, but are you going to have to remove the fender to get a wheel on and off? It would appear so since it's tucked up in there. Just make sure you make your fender fairly painless to remove just in case. Neat idea on the use of the fenders! Doug

So where did you get those hub caps for the 12" wheel from?

Its a 9 1/8 baby moon from redneck trailer supplies. Attaching a baby moon to a spoke style wheel has been covered in this forum somewhere. Four 1/4" rounded head scews are tapped into the wheel to provide a clip for the baby moon to attach to.
