toy hauler trailer ideas

Postby Aaron Coffee » Mon Dec 31, 2007 11:38 pm

Still thinking on a TD/toyhauler for a scooter. Thinking of doing a trough lengthwise out of 12 gauge steel(can bend it at work). Thinking 4 inchs deep, which would put it two inchs below frame(assuming I use 2x2 for frame. Am thinking of using a torsion axle. Is there different brackets to space the axle away from the frame?
We have a pallet of axles at work, I keep wondering if they would notice one missing?
Thoughts?
Thanks
Aaron

Aaron...Scooter? Do you mean serious bike or scooter. I've been hanging around with Lee "Lazybones" too much so scooter to me means a Cushman. Either way, based on what you've done with the last tear...I'm certain it will be spectacular!!! For axle spacing, I'm sure you will whip up something that will work. Doug

Thanks for the compliment! With praise like that I HAVE to buid it. Besides I already came up with a name for #2, "The Hyde-away" for reasons I will not yet divulge. Have to finish two other projects first though. Will continue working out a plan, and hope to start in March or so.
Thanks

I've built the last 2 with a longer tongue that I could put a bracket on to tote a scooter. Haven't gotten a scooter, but I do build in the option from the get go. I'm thinking I'll build a tongue box on the latest project, I can always unbolt it and bolt on the bracket for a scooter. Doug

Look up Ricardo Montabond and get some "Genuine Corintheon Leather" for the exterior. It was good enough for the Chrysler Cordoba.

toy hauler trailer ideas

Postby Aaron Coffee » Mon Jan 07, 2008 6:09 pm

Have been looking at half axles as the answer to my axle situation. From the pics on etrailers (i think thats the one I was looking at), it looks like the axles will have to mount very close to the edge of the trailer, if so does this cancel out the possibility of the wall covering the frame?
Anybody have any pics of installed axles?
Thanks

If you plan for it and keep to the plan it is doable. You don't get a lot of clearance but it can be done.
I would order the axles first and have them on hand, it'll make it much easier.
Keep in mind that to do what you are suggesting you pretty much need a double rail frame to mount them.

If you are planning on using Flexiride half-axles (and they have the advantage of having an adjustable start angle), this is the drawing in their data sheet:

Image

For their 550 or 935 lb/pair capacity units the hub face offset is 4.25" so that would indeed leave you with a tight fit. For the 1400 and 2000 lb/pair capacity units, the hub face offset is 5.88", so that should be perfect - here is my estimate of what you need:

half width of 205 section tyre = 4.0"
minimum tyre-wall clearance = 1.0"
thickness of wall overhanging frame = 0.75"
so, minimum hub face offset = 4.0 + 1.0 + 0.75 = 5.75"

Thinking of making the frame out of 2x2, .125 square tubing with a 12 ga steel central trough running down the center of the frame 4 inchs deep. Would this trough be adequate structurally to tie my crsomembers into?

Was thinking Chrysler, but more along these lines, on the inside and outside, but which one do I choose? :?

Been playing with the trailer balance spreadsheet and it looks like as far as trailer balance my idea is doable. If need be once I get it done and the balance is off, I can melt down some of our lead weights for the race cars and add weight to adjust the balance. Will draw up my ideas and have the engineer at work that does our trailers give me his two cents worth.
I guess one question I have is am thinking of drilling holes in the crossmembers to run wiring through, if I weld a piece of pipe in the holes will this weaken the x-members?
Thanks
