axle choice

Postby Aaron Coffee » Fri Mar 28, 2008 2:49 pm

Getting ready to order axle. Am going with flexiride half axles. TD will be 5x5x10 3/4 plywood walls, trailer will be built stout, planning on hauling the scooter inside(390lbs). From my figuring a 2,000 lb axle is my choice. Just looking for opinions before I order.
Thanks

How are you planning on attaching the half axles to your chassis? It's a bit tricker than a standard axle ya know...

I went with the full torsion axle and used the axle as a x-member for my tear. I really like the way the tear sits lower than with the standard h/f 800# trailer axle.

Thought I would get the axles first then figure it out from there and design the trailer around the axles. Thinking of using 1/4 steel plate. Hoping I can talk them into cutting them on the laser at work.

That will work

If you have a frame crossmember centered where the axle will be, you can also weld angle iron on either side of it and then drill it to match the axle holes - The Flexiride half axles bolt on with 6 bolts per side

2,000 pounds sounds lik a good choice, given that you're carrying a 400 pound machine in there - Pretty sure you would wind up overweight for the 1400 pound pair

Aaron,

Check with Jacques at UCF:

http://www.ucfamerica.com/flexride.html

They will most likely sell you the axles at a decent price. They also have mounting plates that you can buy for reasonable $$ that are made for the axles. I can't remember the price, but it seemed like a pair of the "base plates" ran less than twenty bucks. The plates are 1/8" inch stock and nicely made. I don't know how they will work out yet so I can't recommend them one way or the other. I suppose if I were making my own I'd go with 3/8" plate and tap the holes, but I wimped out and picked up the plates that were designed to work with the axles.
