Hammerite paint colour changes

Postby Muggnz » Sat Jun 07, 2008 3:29 am

Believe it or not. My axle & rim are the same colour.

At least according to the labels on the Hammerite tins.

The paint on the rim was bought around 2 years ago. The axle paint was bought 2 weeks ago. Other than the obvious colour "change", the only other difference is that the later version can be rolled.

Wow that a big change. I love Hammerite paint. Some of the best paint on the planet.

Did you stir it up real good? Gold paint settles out and really needs a good stirring. Could be a change toward a more environmentally freindly formula also. I like the rim color better, its brighter and more bold.
Maybe you can call Hammerite and send them a pic and see what they say.
Good Luck, William

William,

I did stir both of them according to the instructions. Which didn't make any obvious differences to their colour.

I actually quite like both colours.

The brighter one has more rust "hiding" qualities. Whilst the more recent version is more subtle & quiet.

I've just asked Hammerite about the differences. And will let you know what say.

I've just received a reply from Hammerite.

"They have confirmed that the colour of hammerite gold changed significantly when they reformulated to a new pigment (Solar Gold). This new formulation gives better UV resistance then the old formulation.

The panels below show the UV resistance. The first 2 panels show new formulation before and after accelerated UV testing. Similar for the 2 panels to the right but using old formulation.
Whilst this shows some colour difference (new vs old) the difference in colour change is much more significant in Hammer Gold - the old formulation being a very strong yellow colour.

I replied
"Thanks for you help. I thought that the change might be to a change in formulation. However I'd thought it possible to keep the differences much less noticeable, unless of course they wanted to hi lite the change. In which case it would have been ( in my opinion ) appropriate to have changed the name. Perhaps to "Modern Gold". To alert regular, if not frequent, customers to the change. Could you please pass this comment on?"
