Northern trailer wall and floor idea

Postby bobber19 » Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:05 pm

Okay,
I've looked at lots of plans and photos. I have my trailer and I have what I think to be a good idea of how to build a light strong trailer. My trailer is built of 2x2 angle iron. I am thinking of bolting the 3/4" plywood walls directly to the vertical part of the angle iron frame. It will act as sort of a truss to stiffen the trailer. I will bolt plywood directly to the frame and then make a sandwich of insulation and top with another layer of plywood.

Any thoughts?
thanks

Bob
If you haven't done so, measure the distance between the side angle irons from the front to the back at several places. Mine was a 1/4" less in the center. If yours is bowed like mine then your walls will be bowed if you mount them the way you are wanting to.

I bolted my floor frame to the trailer with 5/16 x 4" Carrage bolts. Four bolts on each side, two on the front cross member and two on the back cross member. For pics click on the Building the Alegria II link.

Bob,

I have the same trailer frame. I made my floor using 2 x 4's and 1/2 inch plywood, I screwed the floor to the trailer frame, and then screwed the walls to the 2 inches of floor framing that stuck up above the trailer frame. This allowed me to have a true 60" wide interior for a Queen size mattress.

I PMed you earlier about taking a look at my trailer if you'd like (even though it's not finished). It might give you some ideas on what you can do (or not do) if you'd like to take a look. I'm currently building it in my folk's garage in Dassel (which is even closer to Waconia than Buffalo). PM me if you would like to take a look.

p.s. I will be there today and tonight working on it! I'm trying to get it campable by the end of this month.
Tim
