5x8 trailer

Postby Constrictor » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:30 pm

I am in need of a 5x8 trailer for my tear, The 5x8 trailers ive been looking at are around 700.00 and i would have to remove the steel sides that are around 10" tall, and the tailgate ramp. Would it be much cheaper to weld up my own trailer?

...personally, welding your own is the only way to go...that way, you get specifically what you want...I don't have ANY welding skills, so what I do is buy the steel, cut/fit/jig it all up and have a friend weld it up...can usually be done in an afternoon...you can then goto Dexter or Southwest Wheel and have an axle made up that also fits your custom specs...

I spent around $1,000 on materials to weld up my #2 teardrop chassis. I used a Dexter Torsion axle with brakes ($80 for brakes). If you can get one for around $700 your money ahead to buy a grinder or Sawsall to cut off the un needed parts. Building your own is the best way to go. :) Danny

...yeah, I don't mean to imply that it would be any cheaper...you can figure on $2-300 for a torsion axleand that or more for steel...you still have coupler/fenders/lights/chains/etc to figure on...but you end up with a frame, custom made to your specs...

I was quoted $600 last summer to build a custom trailer, but I had to furnish the axle and the coupler and chains.

I suspect the HF 5x8 is is good as you are going to get. You can take the sides to a recycle center.

They do appear to be bolt together. Did anyone confirm that?

If you can weld, then I guess that would be the way to go. As it is, I don't so I had to buy. The place I got my trailer from quoted me $850 for a custom 5x10 with 15" wheels and everything included. It ended up costing me about $1000 after adding all the "extras" I wanted (LED lights, flip jack, diamond plate, etc.). The plain model would have been just fine, and a solid platform for a tear. They even got it titled and registered for me. I drove it off the lot with paper tags. After reading some of the problems with bolt together trailers and some of the modifications done to them, a custom made trailer may be the way to go, IF you can find one in your area for a good price. Sometimes, you get what you pay for.

I like that one too, but it's not clear to me if that is a bolt together or a welded one. And if it is welded, what does it take to move the axle to fit your build?

It's a bolt together. I was considering it too until I decided on a custom. It looks like a nice trailer for the price. And you can't beat free shipping.

That one from northern tool looks pretty good. But this one looks good also, and they have a teardrop version as well but that one can't be shipped. I'm a newbie as well so forgive the ignorance, but what about brakes on these things? http://www.redtrailers.com/ShowTrailer.asp?id=15

Generic utility trailers with gross vehicle weight ratings low enough that they would not likely be legally required to have brakes when towed by a multi-ton vehicle will not have brakes, because brakes cost money. If you should have brakes with your tow vehicle (which may well be true, depending on trailer weight and tow vehicle) you would need to replace the axle; since the axle represents about half the value of one of these trailers, I see no sense in buying one if you want brakes. If you could get brakes as an option, that might make sense... but I have not heard of that option.

You might find a local trailer dealer that can order what you need. My local Tractor Supply claimed he couldn't but other Tractor Supply store managers do - ours is just too lazy. I did find another dealer that sells the same CarryOn trailers as tractor supply and called to price exactly what I needed. Most of the larger lawn mower stores sell and can special order trailers. The welder I use here also has little work coming in and if thats the case in your area you might could have one welded reasonably.
