Where to buy tow hitch for '04 Grand Cherokee Laredo?

Postby KDOG » Mon Sep 01, 2008 12:26 am

Need to get one installed of course. Now will I have to cut a hole in the rear facia where the reciever hitch is or will it already hang low enough? Any suggestions on where to buy one from?

You can find them anywhere online, just put "trailer hitches" into Google and a bunch will pop up. I entered your info into http://www.trailerhitches.com/ and it looks like yours will be $150 to $230.

It says no drilling required so that means that it will bolt onto existing holes. Most likely, you will have to remove the rear tow eyes and bolt the hitch into where the eyes were. It's usually an esay job that takes less than an hour. The wiring is more difficult than the hitch. They show a T-connector that taps into your existing harness for $40. Once you locate your harness plug, you just unplug it and insert the T-connector inline.

Hmmm they still look like I would have to cut a hole in the rear bumper to accomodate the reciever.... I'll have to check.

One good source of information - and possibly the hitch if you don't need them to install it - is http://eTrailer.com. They usually show most of the available alternatives, and in some cases even have multiple photos of the actual hitch, by itself and on the vehicle (which could answer the bumper cap question). They usually have links to installation instructions, which are useful even if you're not installing it, because they show how it fits and let you know what an installer should need to do (so you don't have to believe their estimate). Even when they don't have an instructions link, they show the original manufacturer's part number, and the manufacturers normally have those instructions on their web sites.

Looking for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I checked one model and didn't see if the bumper cap needs trimming, but I only looked at one. It should be a pretty simple bolt-on with this type of vehicle, so it is worth considering doing it yourself.

I don't know if I've ever seen a Grand Cherokee without a hitch, so I don't know if anything has to be trimmed, but they certainly look like the bumper cap is designed to work with a hitch.
